3 Steps to Get Out of a Mind Funk & Take Action on Your God-Given Calling Today

Business

September 5, 2023

Have you ever felt STUCK in your business? Feeling like you’re in a creative rut, or mind funk? Maybe you’re feeling uninspired and not motivated? Or perhaps you’re feeling a ton of resistance towards working on your business (aka your God-given calling)?

If any of this sounds like you, you’re going to want to pay close attention to this blog post because I’m walking you through the 3 steps that will help you get unstuck… TODAY.

When starting or owning your own business, it’s easy to fall into feeling either a lack of clarity or stuckness. But friend, if you are going through something like this right now, I want you to know that you are not alone. I have gone through this time and time again, and because of this, the Lord has revealed some things to me to get myself back on track and get out of my stuckness.

It’s important that you know there was about a 3-6 month chunk in my entrepreneurial journey where I just felt so overwhelmingly stuck. I felt so much resistance. I didn’t feel motivated to focus, or get things done. I had no energy to be productive and make headway on my goals.. I didn’t feel inspired to work, take action, or pursue my dreams. I felt so much imposter syndrome, and dealt with a ton of self-sabotaging tendencies, limiting beliefs, and negative thoughts. My mindset really was a hot mess.

I felt as though I just wasn’t supposed to pursue my business. However, while my thoughts were telling me no, I knew that wasn’t true. My spirit knew that I was supposed to be pursuing this business, because God had called me to it.

Yet, I was at war with myself.

In one way, God was calling me to do something. Yet, I didn’t understand what I was supposed to do. I felt stuck. I didn’t feel creative anymore. I didn’t even know what to talk about anymore. I found myself spiraling so quickly.

If you are in that position right now, I want you to know that I understand, I hear you, I see you, and I love you. This is exactly why I’m sharing with you these 3 steps, that will help you get out of this mind funk.

These are the exact things that the Lord has revealed to me over time that have gotten me out of that awful mind funk. And the amazing thing? He is revealing to me that I can do this at any point in time. And so can you.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • 3 steps to help you get unstuck and back on track with your Holy Spirit led business
  • Why consuming even the BEST content can actually be keeping you stuck
  • The enemy’s favorite tactic to keep you in a mind funk (because he wants you to stay confused)
  • How to finally feel clear in your faith-based business

 Let’s do this.

Step #1: Replace Your Consumption Patterns

You might be asking, “What do you mean by consumption?”

You have probably heard the phrase “Create 10 times more than you consume.”

However, I really want to challenge this particular phrase today because while I do agree with this statement to an extent, I actually have a lot of thoughts about this statement (but that’s not the point I’m making here).

The point is, the Lord has revealed to me that instead of creating 10 times more than we consume, what’s more important is that instead, we could be consuming 10 times more of the scripture than secular content.

Now, while this may or may not be an exaggeration for you, the point here is that when we consume Him and His Word, He is going to overflow out of us, and because of that, we are going to be creating exponentially more high-value content because the Lord will be right in the middle of it.

I want you to ask yourself these questions:

  1. What kind of content are you consuming the most? Be real with yourself. What kind of content are you consuming the most?
  2. Are you consuming the world’s content or are you consuming the Lord’s content?

Living in today’s society and running our businesses here in 2023, it would almost be impossible to never consume the world’s content.

However, the question is, “Which one are you consuming the most of?” and “Which one are you allowing to guide you or control you?”

The truth is, if I am feeling uninspired, stuck, sad, something feels off, wrong, or I’m feeling this lack of clarity – I know it’s usually because I’m more focused on the world’s content than on the Lord’s content.

I would bet that if you are feeling stuck in a rut in your business, you are probably stuck because you’re consuming more of others’ worldly content as opposed to the Lord’s.

So, how do you change that?

It’s really important to first be honest with yourself here. Are you consuming more of the world’s content than the Lord’s content?

If you realize that you are, it’s going to be important to address what you’re consuming and then address how much of it you’re consuming.

Are you feeling convicted by how much TV you’re watching? I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with TV, but maybe you are feeling a personal conviction about it, and that is something that you have got to address with the Lord.

Are you spending the first 20 minutes that you wake up scrolling on Instagram in your bed or maybe the last 45 minutes before you fall asleep?

Be honest with yourself. What are you consuming and how much of it are you consuming? When you become aware of it, you can then start replacing the world’s content with the Lord’s content.

The way that you show up will change the way that you feel about yourself and your business will change.

The way you view life will change because you’re focusing on the most important thing, and that is the Lord.

Step #2: Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

We all know comparison is the thief of all joy and I would bet that this is one of the enemy’s favorite tactics to use against you because it’s going to keep you in confusion… which will in turn keep you stuck.

I say this because in the past I used to compare myself to plenty of other people in my industry, and my mind went crazy because of it. I started thinking I wasn’t good enough because I didn’t have a podcast at the time, YouTube channel, website, course or I didn’t do as well on video as others did.

I just felt like this huge imposter, and because of that, I would begin to think that no one would want to work with me because they would rather work with “Sally” over here who has it all put together.

If you’ve ever dealt with comparison, I know you’ve probably dealt with these kinds of thoughts too. You’ve probably gotten nervous when you see someone else in your niche or your industry doing something very similar to what you are doing. When I say nervous, I mean you might start getting nervous that you’re not going to secure as many clients because of “Sally” over here doing “better than you.”

We need to call that what it is right now, and that’s a lie.

We are all meant to serve very specific people in the Kingdom of God.

Here’s the truth…

When it comes to comparison, it is the thief of all joy, and it will grab hold of you and pull you into that spiral before you even know what’s happening.

There have been many times in my career where I was completely in my head because I was comparing myself to someone and I didn’t even realize that was happening. I didn’t even realize I was in a mind funk until I was already in it so deeply, and because I was in it so deeply, I didn’t even know why I was in there.

I couldn’t even get to the root of that for a long time, but it turns out a lot of it is comparison, because I was spending all this time subconsciously comparing myself to “Sally” on the other side of the screen.

This goes right back to step number one, which is to replace your consumption patterns.

Stop consuming so much of other people’s content and replace that with focusing on Jesus. I know that it is almost impossible to never consume the world’s content, especially because sometimes the world’s content is Holy Spirit inspired and we need to hear it.

I believe that we can get massive revelation from other people because the Holy Spirit works through other people. But the point I’m making is that it’s so important to be consuming the Word and craving the Word over other people.

Even when you are tuning into someone who is Holy Spirit inspired and Holy Spirit led, it can be difficult to keep your mind from racing straight into comparison because our flesh likes to do that.

 I firsthand have experienced this.

How do we fix it? How do we stop this comparison trap just once and for all?

There are two things that come to mind:

  1. Consume His Word. Consume His Word 10 times more than the world’s content. Be with the Lord and use the sword of the spirit, which is the Word, to combat this.
  2. Catch your thoughts, or as scripture says, capture your thoughts. Catch your thoughts and then reframe them.

Here’s an example of catching your thoughts…

You see “Sally” over here doing something similar to what you were doing, and then you start getting in your head thinking that your clients might want to go to her instead.

Stop that, catch that thought, and then reframe it.

If you truly believe the Lord has put this mission on your heart, then you have to trust Him. In addition to that, if you are truly wanting to commit to His mission over your life, it’s so important to be excited and thrilled that there are other people He has called on a similar mission or even the same mission as you.

That is the truth over that lie. Replace that lie with the truth.

What does God say about it? Speak that.

When you view others as competition, you are making it about a paycheck, not the mission. But when you view them as people on the same God-given mission you are on, that changes everything. Not only does that get rid of the comparison trap, but it pushes the mission forward even more.

If you are truly about the mission, you would want more people to be on the same mission as you because that helps push the mission forward. If that is what you’re focusing on, that is going to make you excited and make you happy. But if you’re focusing on the paycheck, you are going to start comparing yourself to somebody else, and then you’re going to be down in the dumps because someone is doing something similar to you and they just got a client and you didn’t.

Friend, take your eyes off the paycheck and put your eyes on Jesus and the mission He has called you to. It will change everything for you.

Step #3: Make Christ the Center of Your Business

What does it really mean to put Christ at the center, especially in the center of your business?

Over the last couple of years, the Lord has revealed to me that it’s really important to reposition your business as the vehicle that is going to help you fulfill the mission that the Lord has given you.

And in turn, not necessarily focusing on the paycheck because when you make it about the paycheck, you are going to fall into secular patterns, and we absolutely need sales and revenue for our businesses to run.

Sales are essentially the lifeblood of a business.

However, have you ever thought that maybe the reason you’re not bringing in revenue is because you are so focused on it?

You’re so focused on your revenue, your lack of revenue, or even other people’s revenue (and wishing that you had that), and then unknowingly placing that above Jesus.

The truth is, focusing on the paycheck more than the mission leads you down the path of comparison, discontent, resentfulness, and burnout. I truly believe burnout happens because we’re focused on the paycheck and on worldly desires over Jesus. But when you make it about Jesus and about the mission He has instilled on your heart, you’ll be so on fire that nothing will bring you down.

Nothing will be able to grab hold of you and pull you into that quicksand because you are looking at Jesus and He is the ultimate protector. He is the ultimate provider.

He is everything.

So, how do you make sure you are keeping Christ at the center?

It all goes back to being honest with yourself. Are you putting the paycheck over the mission?

Sit down, pray and journal about it.

Sometimes it can be really easy for us to fall back into those secular patterns and those secular thoughts, so take time to pray, journal and repent.
