Are you attracting the right leads to your business?
Have you ever felt like you were just attracting the wrong leads, or even the wrong clients to you?
Maybe they’re not committed to your program or your process. Or maybe every single one of your leads says that it’s not the right time, that they don’t have the money, or they tend to always show some interest and then they wind up ghosting you.
Or maybe they end up becoming clients, but they’re not putting in the work and then kind of falling off the face of the earth… or maybe they just kind of drive you cuckoo bananas.
If any of this resonates with you, then you might want to keep reading because I am breaking down the five reasons why you may be attracting the wrong leads and clients to you, and ultimately how to fix it (because I’m not going to leave you hanging like that).
There have been multiple occasions where potential clients have mentioned to me that they’re dealing with a lot of people who just aren’t committing, or they’re just attracting the wrong types of leads in general. And after working with hundreds of people at this point, I’ve realized there are five main reasons why this could be happening.
Are you ready?
Let’s do this.
By the way, before we get into this episode, make sure you sign up for the free Weekly Implementation Guide that goes right along with this podcast. All of that being said, let’s get into the good stuff…
#1 Messaging
If you are attracting the wrong leads or clients, I’m willing to bet it is probably a messaging problem. The idea here is that you really want to be clear on your ideal client and the problem that you solve for your ideal client.
Now, I know that this is something you’ve probably heard time and time and time again. And you probably think, “No, I know who my ideal client is”, or maybe you don’t. But the thing is that even millionaires and multimillionaires are still working on their ideal clients. They spend so much money in their marketing budget to actually do more research on their ideal client.
You will always be spending time getting to know who your ideal client is, the messaging that they’re using, what they’re looking for, what they’re not looking for, etc . It’s going to be something you are always going to need to do. That’s why I’m willing to bet that if you’re attracting the wrong leads of clients, it is most likely a messaging problem.
I’m gonna give you a couple of tweaks that you can be making right now, but if you want to dive deep into this particular topic, I highly recommend checking out episode three of this show. It’s called Why You’re Not Attracting Clients To You Online and How To Do it as a Multi-Passionate Entrepreneur.
I walk you through what you need to be clarifying in order to really start attracting the right clients to you online, and also how to do it as a multi-passionate entrepreneur. Now, I would also recommend that you check out my free training called Attract Your Queendom. This is free training that has helped hundreds of people determine who their ideal client is and even solidify what their niche is, as well as their messaging.
That being said, I want to share with you the two biggest messaging mistakes that I see people making all the time, and if you tweak them, so much will change for you. The very first mistake that you could be making is that you’re trying to talk to everyone.
Maybe you’re not being very specific or clear. I want you to ask yourself, why are you not being specific or clear?
This usually comes down to a fear of being unable to attract clients because you are afraid of being too specific or clear. You try to talk to everyone in hopes of actually attracting more clients to you, because you’re trying to talk to more people instead of getting more specific. You might have this fear of getting so specific that people aren’t actually attracted to you, and that you’re not actually going to resonate with people.
But let’s bust that myth with an example, shall we?
Let’s say you’re on a boat and you’ve got this orange dye in your hand. This orange dye actually represents your messaging. It represents your marketing. It represents your efforts to actually try and attract your ideal clients to you. On the flip side of that, while the orange equals your marketing, the water or the sea will actually equal all the people in the world on social media or wherever you are online.
Let’s actually take your orange dye and let’s put a drop of it in the ocean, because remember we’re on a boat. And you’re dropping that orange dye into the lake or the ocean.
That one drop represents one post. But let’s say you do 10, or even a hundred posts! That’s a hundred drops.
But, what’s going to happen to that orange dye?
It’s literally going to disappear into the sea of people and people are not going to resonate with it. Your marketing is going to disappear. They’re not even going to have a chance to be attracted to it because they’re not even going to see it.
It’s not even going to make sense to them because there’s so much else going on. There’s so much noise in the online space because you’re talking to every single person and you’re trying to market to every single person, but people aren’t actually resonating with it (because you’re trying to talk to everyone).
But let’s try something else.
You’re going to go get a cup and you’re going to fill it with the water. Now, you’re gonna take your orange dye and you’re going to put a drop of orange dye in this cup of water. What happens then? The dye literally saturates the cup of water because you’re only targeting that specific amount of people.
Because you’re targeting that specific amount of people, you actually need less marketing. You need less effort to actually attract those people because you’re being so clear and specific, because you’re specifically targeting that cup of water.
Let’s get clear.
Who are you talking to? What is the problem you solve?
That leads us to the second big mistake.
The second big messaging mistake is that you may not actually be speaking to the thing they actually want.
You might be very specific and you know who you’re talking to, but you may not actually be speaking to it.
Here’s an example.
Let’s say you are a Christian productivity coach, and you focus on productivity for busy moms. Your ideal client is a Christian mom. She’s probably super frazzled all the time and feels very scatterbrained. Her house is probably a mess. She never feels like she has time for herself. She never does the things that she says she’s going to do. She’s getting behind on everything. She’s starting to feel resentment towards kids, her family, and maybe even her business if she has one. She’s just so tired of feeling anxious, sad and depressed all the time.
In order for this to change, this particular ideal client may need to discover their purpose or get rooted in their identity with Christ so that they can stop feeling so frazzled and can have more peace.
But here’s the thing: your ideal client may not actually be searching for those things.
The things that they’re actually wanting and searching for would be time management skills as a busy mom, or how to get more done as a busy mom. They may not actually connect with the thing that’s actually going to move the needle forward, and actually do the thing that they want.
Let me explain this to you in a different way.
You know how people always talk about, “just putting a bandaid on things.” Your ideal client is most likely looking for the bandaid. They’re probably searching for the bandaid and the reason why is because they’re searching for something very tangible; something that they can see a result in right away.
They’re searching for: how do I organize my kitchen to be more efficient and effective. How can I organize my calendar to get more done through probably looking for that bandaid–that tangible thing.
But what’s happening is that you’re probably speaking so much to the thing that they don’t think they need versus what they think they need.
They actually think they need the bandaid. In order to really attract them, you’ve got to give them the band aid while also giving them the medicine that is going to actually heal what they’re searching for. They come to you for the bandaid, but you actually give them all of it.
You need to speak to identity and purpose.
But, what is the bandaid that they’re looking for? Because that’s probably how they’re going to find you–with the bandaid.
#2 Leadership
How are you showing up? Because your client’s expectations of you and your services will be determined by how you show up. This is all about your social skills and developing yourself as a leader. Do you have clear boundaries and expectations for your clients and your potential clients? Do they know that you only take calls on two days out of the week from this time to this time? Do they believe that you were going to adjust your schedule to always fit theirs?
I have this conversation a lot with my clients and they wind up having to reframe this to realize that their clients are paying them and they have what their clients want. Their clients will adjust their schedules to meet with them.
When you make an appointment with a doctor or therapist, you adjust your schedule to fit theirs.
Why is it not the same with coaching or your own business? That’s what I mean about stepping into your leadership role. Set some expectations and put some boundaries in place. What kind of clients do you actually expect to serve?
Do you expect to serve the ones that are actually going to show up and do the work, or do you expect to serve the ones that actually aren’t going to show up at all? The truth is, if you aren’t positioning yourself as a leader in your industry or your niche, you’re not going to attract those incredible clients that you’re dreaming of.
The easiest way to build authority and be seen as an expert in your industry is through content creation, which goes back to your messaging. Now, I know I talked a lot about messaging before. But I do have another podcast episode that I think you will love. It is episode seven and it’s titled How To Stand Out As A Leader In Your Industry As A Christian Entrepreneur, so make sure you check that out.
#3 How You Show Up Online
People ask me all the time, “Is it more important to have confidence or a strategy when it comes to sales?”
I’m going to give it to you straight.
Strategy is so important, but…
If you are not confident, your energy is going to come through the screen or over the mic and you will not make a sale because people can feel that. They may not know what they’re feeling exactly, except that they just don’t feel like it’s the right fit for them.
If you are confident in what you have, you’ll make more sales with a strategy, but you could still make sales without a strategy if you are staying consistent and going for it, simply because you are confident in what you are selling. The energy in how you show up and share your offer is very important. And not just sharing your offer, but just showing up in general.
Do you show up with confidence and know that you have what your clients need? What is that energy like?
Next time you go and show up online, next time you post your stories, or next time you are filming a reel ask yourself, “How am I going to show up today?”
How do you need to show up? How can you exude confidence? Practice being confident with what you’re saying, even if you’re not selling something, practice that that’s what people are attracted to. They want to follow a leader. They want to buy from a leader. They want to buy from someone who is confident in what they have to offer.
Otherwise, why would they pay someone who’s not even confident about what they have? You have got to show up and be confident about it first.
#4 Mindset Shifts
In this tip, I’m focusing on how you can give your client an ideal client mindset shift as well.
I work with business owners, and there is a subset in this community of business owners that actually want to stay stuck.
They may not realize they do, but subconsciously they’re wanting to stay stuck. They’re self-sabotaging and are habitually creating more problems for themselves. What I do in my messaging and my content is I aim to help them realize that they’re actually choosing to stay stuck. And usually, a reason they’re choosing to subconsciously stay stuck is actually revealed in episode two of this show, it is the Five Reasons You Might Be Self-Sabotaging and How To Biblically Stop It.
It is really important that you actually help your ideal client have mindset shifts through your own content. Why are they choosing to stay stuck? Why are they choosing to stay where they are? Point it out for them. They may not even realize that’s what they’re doing. If they wind up not having a shift, then they’re not going to be committed or ready to invest or move forward. They’re not going to be ready to actually do something different because they’re still subconsciously wanting to stay stuck.
It is up to you to reveal that to them. It is up to you to show them what they are doing and what they need to change in order to see the results that they want to have. It is up to you. You get to change that. How cool is that? That you can actually help them see what is going on inside their mind, subconsciously, or even consciously, you get to point that out in them. You get to help them have those mindset shifts.
Next time you post a piece of content, ask yourself, “How can I give my ideal client a mindset shift today? What needs to shift in their mind to actually be ready? To take that next step, whether they invest with me or not, how can I shift what they’re thinking with what they are currently going through?”
#5 Limiting Beliefs or Self-Sabotaging Behavior
People are usually attracted to those that are similar to them. Maybe you continue to attract leads who won’t commit to the investment or are indecisive, or it’s just not the best time to commit to something…. But that may be exactly what’s going on with you.
Now I’m not saying that just because that happens once or twice means that that’s what’s going on with you.
I’m saying if this is happening consistently, I would recommend taking the time to pause and reflect on what could be mirrored. Maybe the Lord is trying to point something out to you and reveal something to you. Ask yourself if you’re doing this anywhere in your life, or do you have a similar pattern going on in your life somewhere?
Be really honest with yourself because the patterns of our clients and potential clients can often show us our own. If you don’t like what you are seeing in your potential clients or clients, do something about it. If you go through all four of these reasons and you’re like, no, it’s none of these, this could be the thing.
Maybe the Lord is asking you to look at yourself and change habits or patterns in yourself first.
